Make Halloween Outdoor Decorations: "Ring of Ghosts" and "Flagpole Spooks"

Here's a beloved tradition of our house in outdoor Halloween decor:

Ring Of Ghosts

Halloween Decorations

Materials: 3 Twin-sized Sheets 3 Four foot lengths of flexible 1/2 inch Pvc Piping, Wooden Stakes or Dowels 3 Small White Plastic Garbage Bags Masking Tape Newspaper String or Twist Ties Black mark (optional)

Make Halloween Outdoor Decorations: "Ring of Ghosts" and "Flagpole Spooks"

Instructions: 1. First, decree a good location for your ghost gathering. Find a wide open area, or you may decree to group them colse to a tree or light pole.

2. To make the ghosts' heads, crumple up newspaper and stuff the three small plastic trash bags to the desired size.

3. Stick one of the Pvc pipes into one of the bags and wrap the neck with masking tape to secure. Repeat for the other ghosts.

5. Cover each ghost head with a sheet, convention with string or a twist tie under each head. The head should be in the middle of the sheet, so the outer edges can be attached to the neighboring ghosts.

You can make taller or shorter ghosts, but you must adjust the size of sheet you use to accommodate. Our ghosts will be just under 4 feet tall.

4. Push the Pvc piping into the ground in a circular formation about 1-2 feet apart. The sheets should touch the ground and cover up the support. You can also use wooden stakes or dowels, but your ghosts won't have as much movement as they will with the Pvc piping.

6. Finally, knot the ends of the sheets together to give the impression the ghosts are retention hands. Because the Pvc is flexible, your ghosts will now bob and sway in the wind!

7. If desired, make Casper-like faces on the sheets with black marker.

We have 3 children, so we always make 3 ghosts, but you can join together as many ghosts as you wish!

They'll look like they're playing a spooky game of "ring-around-the-rosy"!

Flagpole Spooks

These spooky decorations are easy if you have an angled flagpole attached to the front of your house.

Scary Flagpole Ghost: Hang a "Scream" style mask off the end of the flagpole. Tie a white sheet or a compassionate length of white tulle colse to and behind the mask. This scary creature will appear to be flying as his white garment flutters in the wind.

Flagpole Frankenstein: Hang a Frankenstein mask off the end of the flagpole. Tie a dark colored trash bag tied behind it. Shredding the trash bag colse to the edges will add to the spooky effect.

Flagpole Witch: Hang a witch mask off the end of the flagpole. Attach a witch hat to the mask, then tie a dark colored trash bag tied behind it. Shred the trash bag to make the witch's robe flap in the wind.

Paint a Halloween Pumpkin

|

This year, why not paint a Halloween pumpkin? A painted pumpkin will outlast a carved jack-o-lantern by months and can even be repainted for use as a Thanksgiving decoration. With a small imagination, painting pumpkin faces will become a real house treat.

My wife and I stumbled upon these pumpkin painting ideas quite by accident. A concentrate of years ago we had the grand kids here in late September. On a whim, we decided to visit a local pumpkin patch and let them pick out a concentrate of pumpkins to carve for Halloween. The patch had a small stand set up with various fruits and vegetables for sale, along with a nice supply of jams, jellies and preserves. I think that is the main presume my wife wanted to go there! Displayed prominently along the back wall of the fruit stand were any of the cutest painted pumpkins we had ever seen. I told my wife we had best price a concentrate of them on the way out.

Halloween Decorations

After picking out a few nice sized carving pumpkins we headed back to the stand and were knocked off our feet when the clerk told us the prices for the painted pumpkins. There was nothing less than ! Most were and up!

Paint a Halloween Pumpkin

That got my creative juices flowing. Our smallest granddaughter had fallen in love with one of the painted faces and I just would not let her down. As soon as we got home I went level to the internet and was surprised to find relatively few listings for pumpkin painting.

Next was a trip to the library with the same miserable results. I knew there had to be a source for pumpkin painting patterns and ideas, but where was it hidden. Back on the internet I ultimately stumbled a cross one neat small eBook that included a list of all the important paints and patterns I would need. I bought it and had it downloaded and printed within a few minutes. A quick trip to the hardware store for supplies was followed by about an hour of intense artistic endeavor.

You should have seen the look on my grand kid's faces when I came out of the garage with my first masterpiece! What would have cost over at the pumpkin patch I had slapped together for less than . The best part is that I had plentifulness of paint left over for more pumpkins.

These painted goblins have become quite favorite in our neighborhood. Each year, as soon as I begin putting them out for decorations, my phone and doorbell start ringing with requests. It has assuredly become a very profitable hobby.

You do not have to be an expert artist to generate some creative spooks and goblins. A small paint and some uncomplicated instruction is all you need to paint a Halloween pumpkin.

How Did Halloween Begin?

|

It is believed that Halloween originated from a Celtic holiday known as Samhain, which was paramount in Ireland and Scotland at harvest time for well over a thousand years. Samhain was the time of year (October 31st) when harvesting was completed and animals were brought from summer pastures to protection for the winter months. At Samhain a large festival was celebrated, and fruits, vegetables, grain, and animals, were burned as gifts to the gods in huge bonfires in hope of a victorious new year. It was believed that while the night of Samhain, that the dead could walk among the living, and that the living could ask the dead questions about the future year. Because they believed some of these spirits were evil, they wore costumes with animal heads to scare the spirits and safe themselves.

Christianity spread to the Celtic lands, and in the seventh century, Pope Boniface Iv declared November 1st to be All Saints Day, otherwise known as "All Hallow's Day," hallow referring to sainted ones. All Saint's Day was to celebrate the holy saints and martyrs of Christianity. It is ordinarily believed that this was an effort to Christianize the favorite Celtic holiday and diminish the importance of the Celtic ritual and the influence of their spiritual leaders, the druids. This is also how the day became known as All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween. All Soul's Day was similarly added in Christianity a incorporate hundred years later to celebrate the dead.

Halloween Decorations

Carving out turnips and lighting them goes back hundreds of years with the holiday. An Irish legend tells of a man named Jack who tricks the devil to turn into a coin and keeps him from changing back by placing the coin next to a cross. A year later, Jack dies, but is neither allowed into heaven, or hell, so he must roam the earth. The 1800's brought Halloween to the United States with the Irish immigrants. Pumpkins were carved rather than turnips because they were large and more plentiful.

Out on a Limb on Halloween - Using Tree Branches For the Best, Spookiest, Cheapest Decorations Ever!

|

This is one of the most overlooked Halloween decorations you can do...for Free! And, you might just find it in your own backyard! Forget the costly paper, plastic, and styrofoam junk from the stores. If you want a lot of boo-per-buck, go find some dead tree branches!

Categories: Decoration. Cool. Bigger is better. Cheaper is better.

Halloween Decorations

Skill level: Super Easy.

Out on a Limb on Halloween - Using Tree Branches For the Best, Spookiest, Cheapest Decorations Ever!

Time needed: 30 minutes - 1 hour.

Expense: Totally Free!

"Trees are Not just for Christmas!"

Hit the streets and look for branches that have fallen off of the trees. For indoor centerpieces or "trim", derive up a lot of twigs and small branches. I live in Los Angeles (very urban... Not a rural country road), and I see branches and limbs on the ground every single day on the streets and sidewalks. These are yours for the taking, and they will give you the biggest bang for "no bucks!" For outdoor decorations, the size of the branches are merely little to what you can carry or haul away. I head out in my car and carry a battery operated saw so that I can trim down weighty limbs to fit into the back of my car.

The awesome thing about dead tree branches is that they are typically "made to order" exquisite for Halloween. Obviously, look for the more "spooky" ones with some density and a lot of "branching" because this may come in extra handy if you want to add spider webbing.

Use rope and/or bungie cords to fasten the branches to pillars, posts, mailboxes, entry ways...wherever you can find a sturdy place to preserve the weight. Use some extra awareness concerning your Halloween visitors: Make sure there are no (sharp) branches pointing out at eye-level (both adults' and kids' eye level.) Make sure there's no way a heavy subject can positively be pulled down by a child or slip off of its mount. Protection with huge "props" is a noted concern.

The bigger the branches and the more branches that you use outside, the more decrepit and awesome your haunted castle will be. Aside from "filling in the vacant holes" in in the middle of your store-bought or home-made props, it adds to the ambiance. I say "no home haunting is perfect without 'em!"

Another great thing to do is to add decorations to the branches! ('sounds familiar! But don't pull out any Christmas ornaments!) The best thing is to add the easily ready Halloween spider webbing to the branches. You can do this on small interior centerpieces or the weighty face haunted trees. The webbing is highly easy to work with on tree branches because you can positively spin, pull, and threat strands from subject to branch. A quick "side bar" on webbing: If ever there was a Halloween Decorations decorating "offense" that people should be ticketed for, it's blobby webbing on bushes and walls. What the heck? Webbing is just that: Webbing. Not Blobbing! A spider web should have taught strands and look like...uh...webs! --not clumps of cotton! The trick is to work the bag-o-webs down to little clumps and then pull them long and far into strands from subject to branch. Put a little time and art into this. Would you throw a pile of garland onto a Christmas tree? (Don't sass that... I have a feeling the same offenders might do just that!)

If you are using any of the black-light tricks and the tree limbs will be near the lights, you might think spray painting the limbs with fluorescent paint. You can whether coat 'em, or lightly dapple them.

One last totally free "trick" that's overlooked is leaves! If you are "lucky enough" to have them already on the lawn...leave them there over Halloween. If, like me here in Los Angeles, you don't have any on the lawn, just go looking for a pile somewhere. Again, even though we live in a warm atmosphere here, there are many, many trees that lose their leaves. I take a garbage bag, hunt some down, and bring them home to sprinkle on the lawn. It's especially great to put them around tombstones and such. There's nothing more "half decorated" than a bunch of "scary tombstones" on top of a well manicured lawn. For Halloween...messier is better!

Without a doubt, these "nature's freebies" are the best, easiest, cheapest, biggest tricks to add to your Halloween garnish displays.

Paint a Halloween Pumpkin

|

This year, why not paint a Halloween pumpkin? A painted pumpkin will outlast a carved jack-o-lantern by months and can even be repainted for use as a Thanksgiving decoration. With a small imagination, painting pumpkin faces will become a real family treat.

My wife and I stumbled upon these pumpkin painting ideas quite by accident. A consolidate of years ago we had the grand kids here in late September. On a whim, we decided to visit a local pumpkin patch and let them pick out a consolidate of pumpkins to carve for Halloween. The patch had a small stand set up with various fruits and vegetables for sale, along with a nice supply of jams, jellies and preserves. I think that is the main imagine my wife wanted to go there! Displayed prominently along the back wall of the fruit stand were any of the cutest painted pumpkins we had ever seen. I told my wife we had good price a consolidate of them on the way out.

As soon as we got home I went straight to the internet and was surprised to find relatively few listings for pumpkin painting.

Next was a trip to the library with the same miserable results. I knew there had to be a source for pumpkin painting patterns and ideas, but where was it hidden. Back on the internet I ultimately stumbled a cross one neat small eBook that included a list of all the considerable paints and patterns I would need. I bought it and had it downloaded and printed within a few minutes. A quick trip to the hardware store for supplies was followed by about an hour of intense artistic endeavor.

You should have seen the look on my grand kid's faces when I came out of the stable with my first masterpiece! What would have cost over at the pumpkin patch I had slapped together for less than . The best part is that I had abundance of paint left over for more pumpkins.

These painted goblins have become quite favorite in our neighborhood. Each year, as soon as I begin putting them out for decorations, my phone and doorbell start ringing with requests. It has categorically become a very profitable hobby.

You do not have to be an specialist artist to originate some creative spooks and goblins. A small paint and some straightforward schooling is all you need to paint a Halloween pumpkin.
